Abstract
This study is to verify the effects of mother-child theraplay on parenting efficacy of mothers and attachment stability of toddlers from multicultural families. The subjects include ten toddlers (aged three to five) and ten mothers from multicultural families. They were divided into two groups of five pairs of mothers and children each: an experimental group and a controlled group. The mother-child theraplay program has been conducted for ten sessions for the experimental group every Saturday. It consisted of 40-minute parent education and 40-mintue mother-child theraplay. In order to verify the effects of the program, pre- and post-test have been conducted. Mann-Whitney U-test, a non-parametric statistical analysis, was conducted to examine the difference between preand post-test of the controlled group by SPSS 18.0. Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Ranks Test, another non-parametric statistical analysis, was also used to check the changes from pre- to post-test of the group. The mother-child theraplay program improved parenting efficacy of mothers and attachment of toddlers. This study is meaningful in that it applied a practical program based on accurate understanding of multicultural families. The mother-child theraplay program can be used as an effective means to build mutual attachment between mothers and toddlers from multicultural families.
